Will, P.
The Horrid Mysteries, Two Volumes
London, Robert Holden & Co,
1927, First Edition thus ed, Hard Cover,
Condition: Very Good, One of the novels named in the Northanger Canon (a list of books appearing in Jane Austen's "Northhanger Abbey") was the story of the Marquis of Grosse which was translated from the German by Peter Will and published by William Lane at the Minerva Press in London in 1796. It is said that the original edition is virtually unobtainable, and this 1927 edition stands as the earliest modern reprint. The hero of the tale, the Marquis of Grosse, becomes caught up against his will in a secret society, the Illuminati, that advocates murder, anarchy, and a preliminary form of communism. He implements various plans to foil the society: not only does he flee to other countries to escape, he sets up a rival society of fascists to demolish the Illuminati. In spite of the marquis's best efforts, he is continually drawn back in again. As is so often the case in the Gothic, there is no hope of escape for him. Two volumes, Yellow color pictorial boards, spines mildly darkened, pictorial; rubbed to spine hinges and few chips to hinge area, spine appears to have been rebacked. Each volume is number respectively to the spine and pastedown A377, A 378; also the pastedown is stamped :Please return to the Story Dept. RKO Studios, Inc. West Coast. Binding is very tight, text clean. Vol II has a closed tear across upper page end. All else very good. Protected in heavy weight brodart film. A very Scarce selection of Gothic Literature. 8 vo, 268, 231 pages First Edition Thus
