Condition: Near Fine, One of the most witty, and authoritive of the collector-authors writing on books and book collecting was A. Edward Newton. He began his career as a collector early in life and, when he died in 1940 (Philadelphia), had amassed a library of over 10,000 first editions, primarily of British authors. Color frontispiece profusely illustrated with literary illustrations mostly from Newton's library. Reverse of contents page, neatly top pasted color plate, "An Author & Bookseller" (1797). Original papered pale blue boards and cloth binding, title on label laid onto spine, top edge gilt, 1 1/2 by 1 inch stain to front board all else very clean and tight. Previous owners private library plate to e.p., with quote from Thomas Carlyle; review and author information notice neatly to pastedown and rear e.p; Los Angeles bookseller label to upper edge of rear e.p.
