Schroeder, John Frederick. All edges gilt. Mild rubbing, few darkened areas, lower edge damp stain. End papers replaced, evidence that spine has been reinforced. Front board slightly warped to top. Tightly bound. Begins with Monmouth the campaign of 1778; the army including detachments at different places, was found to amount to only 15,000. At Valley Forge, Washington had ll,8000. The British Army at this time numbered 33,000. Through to Washington's last illness and death. Full page steel engravings, from original designs of historical scenes and full length portraits. Dr. Schroeder, born in 1800, Maryland, was a clergyman, member of the New England Historian society, wrote " Maxims of Washington," and several other works, edited and contributed to works of theology and Christian literature. A very well researched historical volume. Appendix and index to rear. Previous owners name neatly scripted to upper margin of title page. Boucher, Jack E. Absegami Yesteryear Egg Harbor, New Jersey, The Atlantic County Historical Society, 1963, Second Print ed, Hard Cover, Condition: Fine/Very Good, Absegami and the Lenni Lenape were the two tribes to inhabit Atlantic County, prior to it's settlement. This book tells the story of the people, places and events of this area, deep in the Pine Barrens of South Jersey, from that era to 1875. More than 100 photographs, mostly black and white, with a colorful narrative, recounting the inns, taverns, schools, churches and early industries (glass, iron, paper). Historical facts such as: the history of Smithville, early records tracing it back to 1737 owned by John Smith; the wreck of the Schooner Weymouth; Richard Somers and "Somers Point;" many old churches and cemeteries, such as Head of the River Church, the oldest church in Atlantic County, 1792 in Tuckahoe; the oldest one room school house, in Gravelly Run, built late in the 19th century, and in use until 1926; indian and stage coach trails; West's Mystery at Catawba, and much more.
