Boucher, Jack E. Absegami Yesteryear Egg Harbor, New Jersey, The Atlantic County Historical Society, 1963, Second Print ed, Hard Cover, Condition: Fine/Very Good, Absegami and the Lenni Lenape were the two tribes to inhabit Atlantic County, prior to it's settlement. This book tells the story of the people, places and events of this area, deep in the Pine Barrens of South Jersey, from that era to 1875. More than 100 photographs, mostly black and white, with a colorful narrative, recounting the inns, taverns, schools, churches and early industries (glass, iron, paper). Historical facts such as: the history of Smithville, early records tracing it back to 1737 owned by John Smith; the wreck of the Schooner Weymouth; Richard Somers and "Somers Point;" many old churches and cemeteries, such as Head of the River Church, the oldest church in Atlantic County, 1792 in Tuckahoe; the oldest one room school house, in Gravelly Run, built late in the 19th century, and in use until 1926; indian and stage coach trails; West's Mystery at Catawba, and much more. Tacked to rear pastedown, fold out color map of Atlantic County, in fine condition. Blue cloth boards and spine, bright gilt lettering and lighthouse design. Very clean, no writing or markings, solidly bound.
